Dream bat research career uncovered at Arena Theatre event

As part of its Research Investment Fund – round 4 (RIF4) project on Biosciences Research the University of Wolverhampton is hosting a public lecture detailing how one of its graduates became a bat researcher. 

The public lecture is being held on Monday 13 May by Dr Morgan Hughes, a post-doctoral fellow from the University of Umeå in Sweden, at the University’s Arena Theatre in Wolverhampton.  

‘How I got the bat research career of my dreams… (…by being impulsive, scared, ignorant, awkward, obsessive, and clingy)’ is scheduled for 7:30 pm with free food & drinks available from 7.00 pm. 

Dr Stefano Vaglio, Reader in Animal Behaviour at the University, said: “Bat ecologist, Morgan Hughes, talks about how it’s never too late to pursue your dreams, change your career, or sit in the rainforest by yourself, at night, under a sleeping bear in a tree. She discusses seizing the day and getting out of your comfort zone to battle impostor syndrome, anxiety and depression, all against the backdrop of photos from her research career travelling the world studying bats.” 

Morgan Hughes is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Umeå in Sweden and holds an Honorary Fellowship from the University of Wolverhampton. Originally from Wolverhampton, she completed her PhD in urban bats at the University in 2023. 

Morgan’s area of study is the bats of anthropogenic, riparian and lentic habitats and her research has taken her around the world studying them. She is also a mental health advocate, field teacher, Operation Wallacea Scientist, and was the 2022 recipient of the UK’s prestigious Pete Guest Award for Outstanding Contribution to Bat Conservation.
