Coronavirus (COVID-19) and your visa

The Home Office are still finalising visa guidance at this time, and we will update this page once we have more information. For now, if you have any specific concerns, please look on the UKCISA (UK Council for International Student Affairs) website here or contact the visa and immigration support team on At this time we are not offering face to face appointments, but can meet using Skype or provide support via email.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) and attendance

The Home Office have confirmed that during the coronavirus epidemic, attendance can be demonstrated through remote learning instead of face to face teaching. You must still demonstrate engagement, and can do so in the following ways:

Student type

Current method of demonstrating engagement

Temporary method of demonstrating engagement

and Postgraduate Taught

Attendance card signed weekly by lecturers and attendance at monthly checkpoints.

Engagement with learning resources through Canvas at least once per week during term time. Submission of assessments.

Postgraduate Research students

In-person meeting with supervisory team once per month.

Meeting with supervisory team once per month. This can now be electronic, through telephone, video-chat or email. Your supervisor will log these on e:Vision.

Failure to engage with your studies during this time may result in visa sponsorship being curtailed.

If you are a national of a country that is not within the European Economic Area (EEA) and you do not have a passport issued by an EEA country, it is very likely that you will need to apply for a Student Route visa before you leave your home country.

What type of visa you will need, and the process for applying for it, will differ based on the type of course you plan to study, the duration of your course and several other criteria.

As part of the application process you will need to obtain the relevant entry clearance before you can travel, ensure you have sufficient funds and pass any health checks before you arrive in the UK.
