BUILD THE FUTURE – Sam takes control of her future with a Degree Apprenticeship
“The Degree Apprenticeship allowed me to apply for Chartered status and everything I learned whilst studying was relevant to my day-to-day job.”
Sam Pearson, 26 from Cannock, took control of her future by studying for a Degree Apprenticeship in Building Control Surveying at the University of Wolverhampton, with the studies being funded by her employer, Walsall Council, through the Apprenticeship Levy.
Sam graduated last year and secured her new position as Building Control Surveyor in the Building Control Team at the Council.
After taking her A Levels, Sam studied for a Geography degree and began to take a keen interest in the built environment, particularly in relation to construction and seeing how projects were delivered from ideas, to the development stage and construction through to completion. She studied for a Foundation Degree in Construction Management in the University’s School of Architecture and Built Environment before applying for the Degree Apprenticeship.
She said: “I thought that the Apprenticeship would be a really good fit with my previous studies and I had developed a really keen interest in the construction side of my built environment studies.
“I thought that being able to study while I was working would be invaluable and everything I learned on the course, I was able to put into practice every day while I was working – the theory really related to the practice and it was a really great fit, covering all aspects of the variety of my job role.
“Building Control is an important part of the construction industry and is facing lots of changes with regards to competency of the surveyors. The degree course has undoubtedly helped me become a competent Building Control Surveyor with thanks to my employer for the support and the opportunity to study.”
