University project event focuses on deconstruction

The University of Wolverhampton ran an event recently which focused on deconstruction and the reuse of modern building materials.

The University’s European Regional Development funded projects, EnTRESS (Environmental Technologies and Resource Efficiency Support Services) and Construction Futures Research Centre (CFRC), which both sit within the School of Architecture and Built Environment, partnered with the Institute of Demolition Engineers (IDE) to organise the event.

The event was attended by over 80 delegates from the built environment, demolition, architecture and construction sectors and key speakers included Professor Mohammed Arif, Head of the School of Architecture and Built Environment at the University, Dr Paul Hampton, EnTRESS Project Director and Associate Head of School as well as Professor Peter Hopkinson, Director of Exeter Centre for Circular Economy and Richard Dolman from AR Demolition, who is currently studying for a Demolition Degree at the University.

Dr Paul Hampton, Project Director, said: “We were delighted with attendance numbers and depth and breadth of attendees and the quality of speakers who provided a real insight into the challenges surrounding deconstruction and the circular economy.

“EnTRESS is delighted to be working alongside and supporting regional SMEs and is proud of their strong working relationship with IDE and look forward to hosting similar events in the future with other influential stakeholders including clients from industry and commerce.”

The event included a round table discussion with various practitioners and organisations who are currently promoting a greener economy and circular economy principles.

Student, Adele Smith, who also attended the event, said: “This has really inspired me to consider the demolition industry as a sector and I look forward to following a career path with one of the industry representatives that was present.”

Other speakers included James Hobbs from ICE Publishing who discussed ideas for a new book on demolition management, followed by Chris Holcroft from Glass Technology Services and FISSAC who spoke about recycling glass. Justin Furness, Technical Director for Council for Aluminium in Building talked about aluminium closed loop recycling in the UK construction sector.
