Event showcases waste solutions for local business

EnTRESS held its first Technology Showcase event recently. The ‘Right Waste Right Place’ event attracted over 60 delegates including speakers and exhibitors from business, national and local government and academia.

EnTRESS provides business support on environmental technologies and resource efficiency to Black Country Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014 - 2020.

Speakers included Nigel Marsh, Global Head of Environment at Rolls Royce Plc who spoke about their Revert Programme and its top down approach to waste as a means of moving away from disposal, with prevention, reduction and reuse presenting the biggest potential opportunities to also reduce cost.

Steve Cawthorne from the Environment Agency and Andy Johnston from City of Wolverhampton Council gave an overview on duty of care around commercial waste on a national, regional and local level. Steve Cawthorne also shared his expertise on the issue of waste crime.

Matt Mellors, EnTRESS Project Manager, said: “This popular event showcased the opportunities and challenges within the waste management sector, and how business and the public sector are working to deliver the required solutions both in the Black Country and nationally.”

Other speakers included companies who are already receiving EnTRESS business support including Neil Baldwin of Reconomy, Graham Wise of Environmental Resource Group (ERG), Paul Pearson and James Hill of Dunton Environmental, Rob Chattaway of Quick Consign and Mark Hearsey of Auction My Waste.

From the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Dr Alaa Hamood talked about his collaborative research with Severn Trent Water on the extraction of valuable raw materials from raw sewage sludge and Dr Stephen Wilkinson spoke about his research on the process of biomineralisation to utilise biotechnology in engineering.

In addition to the speakers, delegates met with other EnTRESS beneficiary companies exhibiting at the event; ASAN Wood Saints, Pioneer Process and Fire Protection Recycling.
