The University of Wolverhampton and City of Wolverhampton Council are working together to help students who are receiving 'legacy benefits' to understand the change to Universal Credit and through the Managed Migration system.

Managed migration will start to impact households in Wolverhampton and surrounding areas from Monday 19 February.  To help guide those affected through the process, guest speakers from the council will be running two workshops on campus, in February and March.

If you (and/or your partner) are receiving any of the following ‘legacy benefits’, then this important workshop may be of benefit to you:

  •   Child Tax Credit
  • Income-based JSA
  •  Working Tax Credit
  • Income-related ESA
  •  Income Support
  • Housing Benefit

From this month, HMRC/Department for Work and Pensions will be writing to people living in Wolverhampton and surrounding areas who are getting a ‘legacy benefit’ to inform them of their need to apply for Universal Credit under a system known as ‘managed migration’.

Guest speakers from the City of Wolverhampton Council (Welfare Rights Service) will be coming to the University to talk to students to explain how ‘managed migration’ is being rolled out and the implications for students receiving the above benefits.

Anyone who is getting a ‘legacy benefit’ who is issued with a ‘migration notice’ must apply for Universal Credit. If they do not, then their ‘legacy benefits’ will stop and they will not get any Universal Credit. It is very important for students to apply when asked to do so. This is because special ‘transitional protection’ rules will apply if they do claim. However, should a student fail to apply then they will not be able to benefit from the transitional rules in the future.

The workshop dates are:

  • Wednesday 28 February - MC353, Millenium City Building, City Campus, 1.30pm-3.30pm
  • Wednesday 6 March - MC353, Millenium City Building, City Campus, 1.30pm-3.30pm

If you would like to attend either event, please email Michelle Brookes (michelle.brookes@wolverhampton.gov.uk) confirming your name and the date of the workshop you would like to attend.
