University welcomes data science and AI experts to networking event
Students and recent graduates studying Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) courses at the University of Wolverhampton were given insights into career pathways at a recent networking event.
In collaboration with SAS Talent Connection, the University hosted the event at Springfield Campus on 10 December, giving more than 100 students opportunities to speak to prospective employers and experts in the exciting fields of data science and AI.
The students also presented their project posters/data science projects which they had completed using SAS Viya and received valuable feedback from industry experts to further and expand their knowledge in their respective fields.
Experts from organisations including Nationwide were in attendance.
In a panel discussion, students offered questions to the industry partners, and advice was shared discussing what it’s like to work in their respective organisations. Students were also able to speak with industry partners on an individual basis and ask questions about overall career progression.
The event enabled students to understand the value of networking and to begin building relationships that will provide foundations early on in their careers.
Dr. Liam Naughton, Associate Professor in Mathematics at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “We were delighted to welcome SAS Talent Connection to the University. It was also great to welcome organisations who use SAS software and for them to speak to the talented students we’re nurturing at the University.
Anne Okwuzi, Intern at SAS and graduate at the University of Wolverhampton, played her part in bringing the talent event to the University. Anne studied Data Science at the University and graduated this year.
Anne said: “We’ve held SAS Talent Connection events at other Universities but to bring it to Wolverhampton was a special feeling having graduated from the University earlier this year.
“The event was an opportunity for students to get insights from SAS customers around career pathways into data science and AI. It was also an opportunity for students to think about how they can apply their skills in real world data and analytical situations.
Geoffrey Taylor, Global Academic Programme Manager at SAS UK & Ireland, said: “Demand for data science talent has never been higher. With more and more organisations investing in AI this comes as no surprise, but it’s also important students get the opportunity to hear about the many ways their skills can be put into practice in the real world. Dr Liam Naughton and his colleagues are doing sterling work instilling foundational SAS and data analytics skills into their students. Their enthusiasm is inspiring.”
More than 100 students attended the event including Khadijat Shittu who is studying for a Master’s in Data Science at the University.
Khadijat said: “Since I have career aspirations of being a data analyst in the healthcare sector, the event was a chance for me to network with potential employers and showcase my skills.
“Being an international student ambassador, one piece of advice I would give to returning and prospective students is to be open-minded. There are a lot of opportunities at the University and don’t limit your expectations. Be ready to explore and take on challenges and the University will help you on your journey to get to where you want to be.”
Another student who attended the event was Temitope Adeyelu. Temitope, who is studying for a Master’s in Artificial Intelligence, said: “It was great meeting several different employers from the AI industry and to ask them industry-related questions.
“The University of Wolverhampton has opened and created many opportunities for me to build on my experience of working in AI. I have ambitions of being able to merge AI in the legal sector and for it to help lawyers.”
