Second BASES workshop with British Judo to be held in the new year

The University of Wolverhampton and British Judo are all set to host another BASES (British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences) workshop for students, elite judokas, athletes, and sporting professionals to share experiences and gain an insight into combat sport – this time focusing on female athlete health. 

The workshop, which is being held at the British Judo Olympic and Paralympic National Training Centre at the University’s Walsall Campus, will offer presentations from respected lecturers and practitioners as well as GB Judo performance staff. 

Topics being discussed include an understanding of RED-S and its impact in weight-category sports, the menstrual cycle and optimising symptoms and managing disorders for performance, ACL return to play journey in elite judoka, nutrition for female fighters and the psychology behind weight-making behaviours. 

Dr Ross Cloak, Associate Professor in Sport and Exercise Science, said: “Following the success of our first combat sport workshop, we are now hosting our second event which is focusing on female athlete health. 

“The event is open to anyone including staff, students and members of the public and it will be an informal, informative day filled with excellent speakers and subject matter geared towards female athletes.” 

The event is being held on Saturday 20 January 2024 at the British Judo Olympic and Paralympic National Training Centre, University of Wolverhampton Walsall Campus, Broadway, Walsall, WS1 3EZ starting at 9.30 am and finishing at 4.00 pm.
