University celebrates International Women’s Day

The University of Wolverhampton is celebrating International Women’s Day with a series of talks and events. 

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.  The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women's achievements or rally for women's equality. 

Graduates talk graphic design 

There will be a celebration of female alumnae from the Wolverhampton School of Art.  

Join us for presentations and a panel discussion with four Graphic Design graduates at this free event on Wednesday 8 March in the Main Lecture Theatre 2.00 pm until 4.00 pm in The George Wallis Building, Molineux Street, Wolverhampton. 

Gemma Oldfield, Head of Digital Project Delivery at global creative communications agency, DRPG; Kate Farrell, Head of Design at Sherbet Donkey Media; Lisa Barrett, graphic designer and co-owner of design collective Life+Soul, and Paulina Poziomska, Managing Director at Volt-Age Ltd, will all be discussing women in the graphic design world and will draw upon their own experiences and careers in the industry. The session will be chaired by Dr Louise Fenton, Senior Lecturer in Contextual Studies for Visual Communications. 

Annual Women in Business Conference 

The University of Wolverhampton Business School is holding its 5th Annual Women in Business Conference on International Women’s Day – celebrating and supporting the region’s Women in Business. 

The event is free and spaces can be booked on Eventbrite. 

Lisa Burbidge-Brown, Lecturer in Enterprise at the University’s Business School, said: “This year’s theme is Empowered Women Empower Women! The event will start at our newly launched flagship Business School Breakfast Club programme where delegates and speakers can network and speak to our students and colleagues. 

“We will then move to the main conference in the Housman Building where we have a great line up of inspirational speakers from a range of backgrounds including manufacturing, academia, consultancy, directors of local businesses, recent successful graduates and entrepreneurs.  

“This will be followed by a networking session. The event is open to staff, students, local businesses, members of the public and colleagues from other universities and colleges in the region. The event is open to attendees of any gender and is a great way to celebrate the achievements of women in business across our region.” 

International Women’s Day Takeover in Birmingham 

To commemorate IWD, on Saturday 11 of March, Selextorhood takes over Cafe Artum (60 Hunt St., Birmingham) from 4pm -2am for a fundraiser in support of Birmingham’s Centre for Women. The event features afternoon talks and evening DJ performances. At 4:15 pm, University Lecturer in Popular Music, Dr Maren Hancock, will be in conversation with DJ, Producer and Shejay.net founder Kelly Sylvia about the past, present, and potential futures of gender-expansive DJ communities.  

Dr Hancock (she/her) is a queer, anti-racist feminist popular music studies scholar and critically acclaimed professional DJ and musician with a career spanning two decades. She has written about DJ culture for both scholarly and popular publications and is currently writing a monograph on women in Canadian DJ culture in addition to co-editing (with Charity Marsh) the first scholarly collection on Canadian DJ culture. Maren recently appeared in OUTRAVE! a documentary about the queer and BIPOC roots of DJ culture, streaming now on all major platforms.
