CLASS OF 2022: Olivia champions public health after graduating

07/09/2022

Olivia Simpson, 21 from Bridgnorth, has graduated with a degree in Medical Science and Clinical Practice at the University of Wolverhampton and is now on course to champion public health as her chosen career.

Olivia had always wanted to study Biomedicine at university but didn’t get the A Level results she wanted and, when she realised she wouldn’t get the grades to study medicine, she looked around for an alternative degree course.

She said: “The course was fantastic. I was looking for something that would allow me to progress into medicine but which gave me access to placement and clinical skills rather than being focused on laboratory work.

“It’s really exciting to be graduating, it’s like closing a chapter and reflecting on what you’ve achieved over the past three years

“I’m now working as a Wellbeing Champion Coordinator at the University, managing students who will be doing public health campaigns in the community and the University and my end goal will be to go into healthcare management at the NHS or at a private healthcare provider."

Whilst studying at the University, Olivia won a £10,000 grant awarded by the University’s Chancellor, Lord Paul, for Entrepreneurship. She had started a business with help from different business accelerators provided by the University, to help her accelerate her business.

She set up SymbioTex Ltd focusing on producing bio-based, bio-degradable 3D printed products and filaments for the consumables market, mainly focusing on the medical sector.

She said: “My advice to new students starting in September would be to take every opportunity the University throws at you, get involved with everything you can, what you put in is what you get out of the degree and make sure you have a good work/life balance.”

Graduates are encouraged to keep in touch with the Alumni team and take advantage of a range of benefits and support on offer to them including a discount for Postgraduate study and opportunities to benefit from mentoring, volunteering and career advice.
