Regional sports tournament kicks off at University campus

The University of Wolverhampton hosted its first West Midlands regional tournament in partnership with AoC Sport last week, with hundreds of students competing in a range of sports on campus.

AoC Sport is the membership organisation for colleges, leading the development of sport and physical activity in 16+ education.

Over six hundred college students across the West Midlands competed in a variety of sports including netball, volleyball, badminton, football, and basketball, using the state-of-the-art facilities at the University’s Walsall Campus.

During the first round of regional tournaments on November 2, college students competed for the position to represent the West Midlands region at the National Championships in their chosen sport.   

Student ambassadors at the University of Wolverhampton also provided support hosting the event and Sport and Exercise Therapy students set up sports massage stations for competitors after their activities.

James_DaleJames Dale, Interim Head of WLV Sport at the University of Wolverhampton said: “It’s been fantastic to host the first round of the West Midlands Regional Tournament, welcoming hundreds of students from across the region to our Walsall Campus.

“We are proud to be the HE partner for AoC sport and events like these are one of the many benefits that bring together the many opportunities for students, making use of the state-of-the-art facilities we have here at the University.

“It’s been great to see so many students come together competing and playing in the sport they love and we hope to see some of the people we’ve met today return as students studying here at the University of Wolverhampton.”

“The facilities on campus are fantastic and they will provide an excellent experience for students and staff attending the tournaments.

“Not only will students get to compete in world-class sports facilities, but they will also get exposure to the university campus and what sport is like at university, providing attendees with valuable experiences beyond the competition.”

“The regional tournaments are a highly anticipated event in the college sports calendar, which will be elevated further through this partnership, providing colleges with a high-quality, competitive, multi-sport event.”

The tournament continues on November 30.
