03/11/2021

A University of Wolverhampton academic has been shortlisted for a legal award for her work in improving equality and diversity.

Metka Potočnik, Senior Lecturer in Law in the University of Wolverhampton Law School, has been nominated in the category of Legal Academic of the Year in The Inspirational Women in Law Awards 2021 organised by The Next 100 years - a new project dedicated to achieving equality for women in law.

A staple of the work of the First 100 Years, the Awards are now in their sixth year.

Dr Metka Potočnik is a graduate of Queen Mary University London (PhD), King's College London (L.LM) and University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Law (L.LB), specialising in intellectual property, international arbitration and commercial law. She is qualified in Slovenia (Bar Member since 2008), with practical experience in commercial cases (Court of Appeal Ljubljana). She lectured at QMUL, King's College, UCL and University of Surrey.

Dr Potočnik is the Wolverhampton Law School Coordinator of the West Midlands Legal Doctoral Network and the member of the editorial board of the Wolverhampton Law Journal.

She has been nominated for her work and projects at the Law School on promoting the participation of women in the legal profession and her scholarship on feminist approaches to intellectual property law.

Dr Potočnik said: “The placing among the finalists for the 2021 Inspirational Women Award has both humbled and inspired me. It represents recognition of my past efforts and further provides me with courage required to continue this much important work in my teaching and research. A place in the group of so many inspirational women who pursue equality of the legal profession in all they do provides me with the energy needed to continue advocating for change.”

The awards seek to identify individuals from across the legal profession who are leading the way in improving equality and diversity. They will be overseen by a distinguished panel of judges including the Vice-President of the Law Society of England and Wales, Lubna Shuja and Sean Jones QC, Recorder at Ministry of Justice UK.

This year’s online ceremony will take place at 6-8pm on 3rd November 2021.

Anyone looking to study at the University of Wolverhampton should register for one of our forthcoming Open Days.
