University policies explained: Understanding extensions and extenuating circumstances

14/10/2024

If you require more time to complete your assessment, the University offers three routes for getting additional time.

Your three extension options are:

  1. Evidence-based extension - submitted via e:Vision, with your underpinning evidence for an additional 7 days to be granted, without penalty to your mark
  2. Use one of your self-certification tokens. Each student has 3 tokens per academic year. Using the token will give you an additional 7 days, without having to provide evidence and without any penalty to your mark.
  3. Automatic extension - allows you to submit up to 7 days after the due date of the assessment. However, this does attract a penalty to the mark.
    • If you submit 2 days after the due date, that will result in a 10% deduction to the assessment mark.
    • Submittion 3-7 days after the due date, will result in a 20% deduction to the assessment mark.

Note - extensions are not applicable to all assessment types. E.g. invigilated exams do not have an extension available.

Students will approved student support and wellbeing extensions will automatically have an additional period of time added on to your assessment due date.

Extenuating Circumstances claim

If you require more time than the extensions allow, then you should consider submitting an extenuating circumstances claim, supported by evidence, and where approved, will role your opportunity on to the next available one.

Resits and reassessments

If you fail an assessment, it's likely that you're going to need to resit it at a later date. The resit opportunity will be created once all the module assessments have been calculated.

For non-exam assessments, then your next opportunity will be when you submit that assessment.

For examinations, your resit opportunity will be at the next available scheduled week within the academic calendar.

when you submit and pass the reassessment the mark will be capped at the minimum qualifying pass mark.

Note - if you previously took extenuating circumstances, then that will not be capped.

Refer to your course guide for more details.
