University policies explained: Understanding compensation
This video outlines how compensation is applied to marginally failed modules, allowing you to complete and progress to your next level.
Depending on your course of study, you may be eligible to receive compensation for a module that has been marginally failed.
Marginally failed is a mark in the range of 35 to 39. The compensation regulations allow you to have up to 40 credits of compensation. (Not applicable to Level 6, where only 20 credits can be compensated. Dissertation and project modules can not receive compensation.)
- For Level 3 and 4 modules - compensation is applied at the earliest point. You will not be required to do the reassessment where compensation can be granted to complete your level.
- For Level 5 and 6 modules - you will receive compensation at a later date, giving you the opportunity to resubmit the assessment and improve your overall module mark.
Compensation is only applied where it completes your level and allows you to progress.
Where compensation is applied, you will receive the credit for the module, however, the original mark will stand in your record.
Compensation is always applied at the end of the year of study, through the examination board process.
