Understanding Research Development and Impact

See table below and to book a course or to view course availability, please log in to Agresso Self-Service.

Date and Time Workshop Name Description

25th January 2024

2- 4 pm
Leading a Research Grant: Research Projects or Fellowships? The role and responsibilities of the Principal Investigator. Distinction between research projects and fellowships; Career stages & eligibility; Understanding top-down and bottom-up driven research schemes.

22nd February 2024

2 - 4pm
Gearing up to lead a research proposal To assess your readiness, plan steps, and take action that will move you forward to become research independent.
This course is designed to help you to develop your profile and present your research (think ‘brand’); to be proactive about situating yourself in your area, develop a vision and strategy, explore ideas, and build networks.

21st March 2024

2 – 4 pm
Developing your research idea into a research project This session will consider what is involved in generating strong research ideas, why it is important for an idea to be novel, how to provide a strong theoretical underpinning that identifies the research problem and how to develop research questions to address the identified research issue.

25th April 2024

2pm - 4pm
Turning a research project into a grant proposal Targeting the right funder (strategic priorities; timeliness/urgency); translation of research goals to meet audience(s); lay and funder languages; a grant application as an exercise in communications.

16th May 2024

10 am – 11.30 am
Costing a research project The art of good project design and ultimately successful bid writing is being able to design a research programme that has impact but does not cost the earth.  Funders are looking for value for money in the work that they fund.  They are also looking for lean programmes.  This session will look at how you break down a research programme so that you can cost all the components required to fully cover the costs of a research programme.
