University professor awarded UNESCO Chair

A professor at the University of Wolverhampton has been awarded a prestigious UNESCO Chair to further his research on Innovative Informal Digital Learning.
The UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) Chairs Programme designates several professors globally to develop inter-university cooperation, collaboration and information sharing, to address pressing challenges and contribute to the development of societies.
Professor John Traxler has been formally invited by UNESCO to establish a Chair focussed on innovative and informal digital learning in disadvantaged and development contexts.
This exciting research opportunity is intended to enhance, formalise and focus existing and potential activities, networks and consortia.
John’s work will focus on building better links with different communities and cultures to showcase how mobile, social and accessible digital technologies can empower and embody their learning.
John Traxler, Professor of Digital Learning at the University of Wolverhampton said: “I am of course delighted to be honoured by UNESCO in this way and expect that the Chair will open up a very rewarding range of possibilities in terms of worthwhile external collaborations.”
The UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN (UNESCO’s University Twinning and Networking scheme) Network Programme now comprises 24 UK experts in the fields of education, science, information, culture and communication. The programme works with partners in the UK and globally to deliver UNESCO’s role of building a more peaceful and equitable world.
UNESCO is the only UN agency with a mandate to cover all aspects of education, including the delivery of Sustainable Development Goal 4 as part of the Global Education 2030 Agenda.

Professor Traxler is also on the Advisory Board for QS World University Rankings and continues to be ranked in the top two per cent in his field globally and has over nine thousand citations.
