22/07/2022

From starting out as a nervous student on her first day at university, Coral Thacker is now a confident teacher in Physical Education at Heath Park secondary school in Wolverhampton.

Coral, from Wolverhampton, studied BA (Hons) Physical Education before progressing to a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Secondary Physical Education.

With outstanding sports facilities on her doorstep at the University’s Walsall Campus, Coral states the University of Wolverhampton was the perfect place to study for her degree.

In addition to her studies, Coral also studied an additional qualification ‘Level 1 Coaching Assistant’ supported by WLV Sport, to teach tennis at the University.

Coral said: “It was a very surreal moment to be graduating today and fantastic to see everyone celebrating.

“I loved my degree - everyone I’ve met has contributed to my time here, I’ve made some great friends and received lots of support from the amazing lecturers, which has really boosted my confidence.”

During the graduation ceremony, Coral also received the ‘WLV Sport academic achievement award’ in recognition of her hard work and dedication to sport.

With a strong passion for sport, Coral says becoming a PE teacher has always been ‘the goal’ and to have her first class starting in September is a dream come true.

Coral said: “To be a PE teacher is the best feeling ever, I feel like I’m exactly where I need to be.

“Sport is something that’s lifelong – it’s not just about performance, it’s about being social, sharing emotions, experiences, and becoming a well-rounded person through the education of sport.”

Coral aims to continue her education at the University of Wolverhampton, with an ambition to study for a Master’s Degree and progress further to study for a PhD.

Graduates are encouraged to keep in touch with the Alumni team and take advantage of a range of benefits and support on offer to them including a discount for Postgraduate study and opportunities to benefit from mentoring, volunteering and career advice.
