Retired Medical Director receives honorary award

A retired consultant physician and medical director has been recognised for his services to the health sector by the University of Wolverhampton.
Dr Simon Walford received an Honorary Doctor of Health and Wellbeing from the University at a graduation ceremony on Thursday, 9 September 2021.
Simon is also a former Chair of Governors at the University, and led the Board during the rejuvenation of the University’s Springfield super-campus.
Dr Simon Walford has a long-standing connection to Wolverhampton, and is a retired Consultant Physician and former Medical Director at Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals Trust.
He said: “Never, for a moment, have I regretted persuading my young family to move to Wolverhampton in the difficult days of the early 1980’s. Our happiness and achievements mirror the remarkable renaissance of the City. I am very grateful that “Opportunity and Innovation” – as in the motto of the University – encouraged and supported by so many people, have been there to enrich all our lives.”
Simon came to Wolverhampton nearly 40 years ago as one of the three consultant physicians at the Royal Hospital. He ran the Diabetes Clinic and raised the funds to build the Diabetes Centre at New Cross when the two hospitals started to merge.
His connections with the University predate its foundation in 1992 through his interests in research and teaching and he was an honorary Professor of Medicine.
He was Medical Director of Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals and made a substantial contribution to the development of both undergraduate and graduate medical training in the region.
Amongst Simon’s many triumphs, he also helped guide the board through the difficult but ultimately rewarding rejuvenation of Springfield.
The University of Wolverhampton graduation ceremonies are taking place at the Grand Theatre in Wolverhampton from Thursday 9 September – Friday 17 September 2021.
The 17 ceremonies will see over 3,000 students who completed their studies in 2020 collect their awards.
It is the first time the University has held a graduation ceremony since December 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
