CLASS OF 2020: Graduate excels in business to further her career

A University of Wolverhampton graduate excelled in business to further her career in the NHS and has graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Business Management at the University of Wolverhampton Business School.
Baljit Nandhra, 35 from Birmingham, started working for the National Health Service (NHS) 13 years ago after deciding she wanted to change her career. Unsure about what she wanted to do, she started to work in project management and decided that the time was right to boost her experience with a relevant degree qualification in order to further her career.
She said: "I committed myself to starting my long-awaited degree as it was a personal aspiration of mine and also relevant to my role in the NHS and career. I worked full time for 5 years as well as studying part time.
“It was quite daunting going back into study after many years; it was helpful to see so much information available on the university online platform and I found it easy to navigate through. The University, both staff in the Faculty and my Module Leaders, have been supportive throughout my study. Most importantly my supervisor, Janet Cash, who supported me throughout my research piece in my final year was absolutely amazing.
"Now that I have finally graduated, a year later than planned, I found whilst I was still studying, it opened up more doors for me to progress in in the NHS.
"At work, my degree has enabled me to transfer my learning into my workplace. Doing this degree has not only enhanced my knowledge base but also supported my growth as a person. Since completing in summer 2020, I have already had a promotion and reached my main goal - and I'm not going to stop there!
"It feels absolutely amazing to have graduated with a First Class Honours and I couldn't have got through those 5 years without the support of my family, friends, work colleagues and most importantly, my mum... she has been and always will be my rock! It was a difficult journey but was definitely worth it and I'm going to really enjoy my celebrations."
During her time at the University Baljit received the Gold Award in Employability and Enterprise. To achieve the award, students need to carry out various tasks which show they have developed employability skills during their time at University. These include 60 hours of work experience, volunteering or self-employment, preparing a short presentation on their career plan or a business pitch and analysing their own skills and experience and marketing them in a high standard written application such as a CV. There are three levels of the award – bronze, silver and gold – that students can work towards, enabling students to develop a portfolio that will act as a useful toolkit for future career planning and job seeking.
Baljit is currently a Project Manager for Health Education England.
Class of 2020 graduate successes will be celebrated on the University’s Alumni Facebook page as well as their Instagram and Twitter channels. Graduates are invited to share photos, thank you messages and memories of their time at the University of Wolverhampton.
