Creatives offer words recycling opportunity as part of humanities festival

22/10/2021

The University of Wolverhampton’s Creative and Professional Writing team is looking for words which can be recycled as part of the Being Human Festival 2021.

Being Human is the UK’s only national festival of the humanities. A celebration of humanities research through public engagement, it is led by the School of Advanced Study at the University of London, the UK’s national centre for the pursuit, support and promotion of research in the humanities.

University of Wolverhampton researchers recently secured funding to host a series of events showcasing research in the humanities. The series, RICHES: Resurgence in Commemoration, Humour, Exchange and Story Telling has been selected for inclusion in the festival.

The Story Recycling Bank has been created by the University’s School of Humanities team as a place for writers to submit writing they have previously created in order to recycle their words and stories.

Creative and Professional Writing degree course leader, Dr Lisa Blower, said: “Like all great storytellers that have come before, writers draw from all sorts of sources, texts, and materials that have existed over the centuries, reconfiguring their origins and reimagining them. They even recycle their own old material.

“We’ve all written things we think are rubbish, stories and poems that have tangled us up. We’re urging writers to not throw their words away, instead they should recycle them. We’ve created our Story Recycling Bank for this.  When you dispose of your words they become a creative prompt to light the flame for another writer. In return, you’ll get your own prompt from someone else. Then we want to hear back from you to find out how you’ve recycled and re-written your new work. We’ll be looking to publish these on our special website.”

Lecturer, Dr Rob Francis said: “This is my fourth year involved in the festival, and I love the inclusive, interactive and collaborative nature of all the events. Our recycling bank has this ethos at its heart – encouraging new voices into the arts and humanities.”

Participants can email their trash to recyclewlv@gmail.com and once they’ve reworked their new prompt they can submit it using the same address.
