Department of Sport receives Athena SWAN Bronze Award

The University’s Department of Sport in the Institute of Human Sciences has been awarded an Athena SWAN Bronze Department Award in recognition of their work to support gender equality.
The Athena SWAN initiative is a national charter, now part of Advance HE, which recognises and promotes good practice in gender equality.
Athena SWAN presents institutional awards (University of Wolverhampton has an Athena SWAN Bronze Institution Award) along with departmental awards that recognise departments that are working to promote gender equality and address challenges relevant to their discipline, in addition to university-wide policies.
Dr Ally Forbes, Sport Business Management Course Leader and Athena SWAN Lead for Sport, said: “I am delighted that the Department of Sport has been awarded an Athena SWAN Bronze award, recognising our work to promote gender equality.
“Inclusivity is embedded within the ethos of the university and the award is recognition that the department is committed to being an inclusive place to work and learn.
“The award is testament to the collaborative work undertaken by staff in the department.”
For their submission, the Athena SWAN self-assessment team collected and analysed data to evaluate policies and practices, and they sought the voice of staff and students in consultation activities to support the development of their action plan.
The action plan sets out a range of activities that will support their continued work in the department to address unequal gender representation and support the career progression of staff.
Professor Nazira Karodia, Pro Vice-Chancellor Regional Engagement and chair of the Athena SWAN committee at the University, said: “It is fantastic news that the Department of Sport has been successful in their application to Athena SWAN and been awarded a Bronze Department award.
“This is on top of the University-wide Bronze award, demonstrating their additional commitment to promoting gender equality.
“As a University, we are committed to the aims of the Charter and are actively working to implement change that encourages women to embark on careers in what are traditionally regarded as male disciplines.
“Our aim, guided by Athena SWAN, is to remove the barriers that preclude both men and women from fulfilling their potential.
“Equality and inclusivity are extremely important to us, and is a major part of our mission behind being the University of Opportunity and our Vision 2030.”
The Department of Sport’s award is valid until 2026.
