BUILD THE FUTURE – Katie surveys a construction career with Degree Apprenticeship

09/02/2021

“Getting paid to learn and already being on a career path is a win-win for me.”

Katie White, 20 from Dudley, has surveyed a career in the construction industry with a Chartered Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship at the University of Wolverhampton.

Katie is a Construction & Surveying Trainee working with the Housing Maintenance team at Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council who is funding the Degree through the Apprenticeship Levy.

Initially, with sport as her passion, Katie was interested in becoming a Physiotherapist and studied for a mixture of Sport and Business BTEC and A Level qualifications at Sixth Form, having secured a place at university to study for a Sports degree. She had explored the world of work with an accountancy firm on a placement and realised that she wanted to pursue a career rather than go to university.

Katie is in the second year of her five-year Apprenticeship and studies one day a week, spending the rest of the time working full-time and supporting the team, helping to carry out pre-contract exercises such as the procurement of new contractors to carry out repairs and maintenance work within the Dudley Borough.

She said: “Sport was my passion but I knew, from working on a placement, that I wanted to earn money. I started a Degree Apprenticeship as a Chartered Accountant but it didn’t suit me so I looked around for something else and the job came up with Dudley Council.

“I knew that I didn’t want to be working in an office all the time and wanted something with a mixture of site working and office working. I didn’t know anything about Quantity Surveying but it sounded really interesting and I’m really enjoying it.

“The support at Dudley Council is great and the study time you are given really helps with the learning. I feel like I’m on a career path now and hope that the Degree Apprenticeship will lead me to a managerial role. This is the first step, it’s hard work but it’s definitely worth it.”
