‘Brexit and Deportations’ project profiled on EU CORDIS website

‘Brexit and Deportations’ (BRAD), a recently finished research project at the University of Wolverhampton, that was designed to research the implementation of the new UK deportation system concerning EU nationals, has been profiled on the European Union’s (EU) CORDIS website.

The article explores the project’s findings that racism towards citizens from the poorest member states of the European Union has influenced Britain’s pre-Brexit deportations and could impact post-Brexit practice.

The project fellow, Dr Agnieszka Radziwinowiczówna, is quoted in the article saying: “There was a representational pattern in the pro-Leave media of the ‘vile Eastern European’ – the criminal coming to the United Kingdom from the ‘new Member States’, who is a threat to public security and moral order with his innate criminality.”

BRAD, which was carried out in the Faculty of Arts, Business and Social Sciences (FABSS) between November 2019 and November 2020, received nearly €200,000 of funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme under Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions.

Dr Aleksandra Galasińska, Reader in Discourse and Social Anthropology and the project supervisor, said: “I am very pleased that BRAD has been featured on the EU CORDIS website, providing the project with additional international publicity.

“It is even more thrilling since the space on the website is very competitive and also less often focuses on projects related to societal issues, as in the case of BRAD. Agnieszka and myself worked to a very tight deadline to see this dissemination through.

“It is great opportunity to showcase an excellent research delivered at our University and once again put us on an international research map.’’

The article is available in six languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Polish.
