Honorary degree rewards engineering success

20/09/2019

An engineering industry professional has been awarded an honorary degree from the University of Wolverhampton.

Beverley Stanford has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering in recognition of her outstanding achievements in the field of control theory and systems engineering methodologies, in particular her insight into 'value management' and her role as the first female President of the Institute of Measurement and Control.

Beverley has over 25 years' experience managing multi-discipline capital projects, valued up to £200 million, in the chemical, fibre, pharmaceutical, food and biomass industries in the UK, Europe and North America, often involving technology transfers and project teams based across continents.

In 1979, Beverley joined Courtaulds Engineering Ltd, latterly part of WSP, where she progressed quickly into project management before becoming head of major projects.  In later years she has run her own consultancy, specialising in value management.

Throughout her career, Beverley has been actively involved with the Institute of Measurement and Control and the Women's Engineering Society, promoting careers in engineering to young people in schools and higher education.

She said: "Receiving this honorary degree comes as a real surprise. It's a great privilege and I'm extremely proud to have been given such a prestigious award.

"I am particularly pleased that my family have been able to be here to share in my success, and so my sincere thanks to the University for making this possible.

"The University of Wolverhampton has a history of providing opportunity to enable a diverse cohort of students to achieve their ambitions.  So my message, to all those about to graduate, is to aim "high" and have a clear plan of how you intend to achieve your aims.

"Remember that "success" is not always about how much you earn or how far you climb within an organisation, and of course, you may not get it right first time around.

"Show respect and a little humility to those around you.

"Make the time to share your experiences with the generations of students that will be coming after you.

"And, above all, do yourself justice!"

Honorary awards are presented by the University of Wolverhampton to people who have made a significant contribution to their field of expertise.

The University's graduation ceremonies take place at the Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton, from Thursday 12th September to Friday 20th September 2019.
