Honorary Degree hits the right note for music professional

A music professional has been awarded an honorary degree from the University of Wolverhampton.

Michael Elliott has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts In recognition of his lifetime contribution to the field of international arts and culture and to acknowledge the many years of service he has given to the University.

Michael is the Chief Executive of ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) and has previously been Chief Executive of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Director, Culture at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, Chief Executive of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Associate Cultural Director for Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture in 2008, having led a successful partnership of major cultural organisations in the city.

In the 1990's he was Chief Executive of West Midlands Arts, the regional arts funding body and Chief Executive of the Heart of England Tourist Board. He also served as Chairman of the Belgrade Theatre in this period.

Michael was Chairman of the Governing Body of the University of Wolverhampton until November 2014 and is now one of the University's Pro-Chancellors.  He is currently a trustee of the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

He said: "I am proud of my long association with the University and of its considerable achievements in the advancement of its students, the regional economy and arts and culture. I am therefore, deeply honoured by the University's decision to award me an honorary degree and I am looking forward to joining the graduands of the School of Performing to celebrate their academic achievements at the graduation ceremony on Monday 16th September."

Honorary awards are presented by the University of Wolverhampton to people who have made a significant contribution to their field of expertise. 

The University's graduation ceremonies take place at the Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton, from Thursday 12th September to Friday 20th September 2019.
