Renowned professor scoops lifelong learning award

A renowned University of Wolverhampton professor has received a national award in recognition of his dedication to lifelong learning.
Professor Sir Alan Tuckett received the Universities Association for Lifelong Learning (UALL) Special Award at a recent conference in Telford.
Sir Alan has forged a reputation as the ‘voice of adult education’ during an illustrious career which has been dedicated to developing lifelong learning on a global scale.
The Professor of Education has been a pioneer in the field of adult learning for 40 years and received a knighthood in 2018 for services to education, particularly in support of adult learning. His work has been dedicated to breaking down barriers enabling adults to access education.
The annual UALL Awards scheme recognises and celebrates projects, programmes and practices that promote lifelong learning nationally and internationally. The prestigious special award recognises Professor Sir Alan Tuckett’s dedication to promoting lifelong learning.
Professor Sir Alan Tuckett said: “It is an honour to be celebrated by my peer group in this way, just as it has been an honour to work with so many inspiring adult learners over 45 years.”
The Reverend Canon Professor Peter Neil, Chair of UALL, said: “I am delighted that Sir Alan has accepted this award. He is an inspirational pioneer in the field and his work has been very influential both in the UK and internationally over many years. He is one of the great champions of lifelong learning in the broadest sense and we in UALL are delighted to have his continued involvement with us.”
One of the biggest examples of Professor Sir Alan Tuckett’s work affecting change came in 1992, when he established Adult Learners’ Week. Since rebranded as Festival of Learning, it is the biggest celebration of adult learning opportunities in the UK. It is now held annually in 55 countries and a driving force in changing attitudes to lifelong learning worldwide.
Sir Alan has been Professor of Education at the University of Wolverhampton since January 2015 and supports the University’s commitment to lifelong learning.
He acts as an advisor to UNESCO on adult and lifelong learning, influencing international policy. In 2016, he was awarded the distinction of UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) Honorary Fellow.
