Project to support African entrepreneurs secures £1.3m

11/09/2017

The University of Wolverhampton has secured funding of £1.3million to support the education of entrepreneurs in Africa.

The innovative project, delivered with seven partners in Africa, will be funded by the European Union.

The University’s Centre for African Entrepreneurship and Leadership (CAEL) will lead the €1.4m project which will focus on strengthening communities by enhancing awareness of self-employment opportunities.

Over five years, project leader Dr Paschal Anosike, Director of CAEL, will visit the partner institutions in Africa to oversee workshops, monitor progress and co-ordinate conferences attended by government officials, employers, SME representatives and the media.

The seven African partners include Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), Makerere University (Uganda), Kyambogo University (Uganda), University of Ghana (Ghana), Milpark Business School (South Africa), Ministry of Education Uganda and the Private Sector Foundation Uganda.

Dr Anosike said: “We are delighted that the EU has awarded the University such a significant grant to work jointly with the higher education, government and non-governmental sectors. The aim is to strengthen communities towards self-employment through entrepreneurship education.

“It will involve academic exchange programmes to share ideas and expertise, as well as social and economic development within communities across Eastern, Western and Southern African regions.

“This is in recognition of our leading role in Africa in the area of entrepreneurship education development over the last few years. CAEL has worked with higher education institutions, governments, international development agencies, NGOs and the private sector across Africa to develop sustainable entrepreneurship strategies through training, research, curriculum development and policy formulation.”

In 2014, one of CAEL’s initiatives with the University of Maiduguri in northern Nigeria won best International Project at the Guardian University Awards and a PraxisUnico Impact Award.
