Former Pharmacy student boxes clever for cancer research

13/09/2016

A pharmacy graduate is pulling no punches when he steps into the ring to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Baldev Danny Singh, 27 from Telford, studied for a Masters Degree in Pharmacy at the University of Wolverhampton and is currently in training to take part in an Ultra White Collar Boxing (UWCB) Match at Wolverhampton Civic Hall on Saturday 1st October.

White Collar Boxing originated in New York in 1988.  A doctor and an attorney trained for a few weeks before boxing each other at a black tie event.  Since then it has been the fastest growing corporate contact sport in the world.

After graduating, Danny joined Boots the Chemist in Telford and trained as a Boots Macmillan Information Pharmacist (BMIP) - a new service created for people affected by cancer which complements and supports the work of Macmillan professionals in the community.

He said:  “The work placement opportunities offered whilst studying really helped prepare me for the world of work, taking me into primary and secondary care and around local hospitals. I really liked the thought of using my clinical skills and taking them into the community where I could have direct patient-centred interaction.

“When a family member was diagnosed with cancer it affected the whole family and the reality of the disease really hit home.  That’s when I decided I wanted to help do something about it. I’d always been interested in keeping fit and this seemed like an ideal way to push myself physically and raise money for a really good cause at the same time.”

Danny is currently in training, attending an eight week camp with Wolverhampton Amateur Boxing Club, funded by UWCB.

Paula Young, spokesperson for Cancer Research UK in the West Midlands, said: “We’re so grateful to each person that signs up to help us beat cancer. While they’re out fighting in the ring our researchers are fighting cancer in the lab and working to find kinder treatments and a cure for this devastating disease.

“Cancer Research UK receives no government funding so every step it makes towards beating cancer relies on every pound raised by our supporters.”
