University extends its learning reach across the globe

12/12/2016

Students from countries across the globe have joined the University of Wolverhampton to study on its International Foundation Year course.

The course, which is offered by the International Academy at the Priorslee Innovation Campus in Telford, is designed for international students who want to study a degree at the University of Wolverhampton but do not have the appropriate qualifications to move straight onto a degree course.

Twenty six students aged between 18 and 24 from Cyprus, Russia, Nigeria, Lithuania, Qatar and China are aiming to progress to undergraduate degrees in Law, Engineering, Business, Social Sciences and Architecture.

Alistair MacDonald, International Foundation Year Course Leader at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “The course develops the skills needed for studying at degree level and provides the opportunity for students to experience University life, preparing them for the next level in their studies.

“Students enjoy working collaboratively on modules like ‘Getting Aheadas an International Student’ and ‘Learning in a Digital Environment’ where they can develop negotiating and team building skills as well as refining their English language capabilities.

“In their specialist modules at City Campus our students have the chance to meet and study with home and international students on modules taught by staff from across the University’s faculties such as Science and Engineering and Social Sciences.”

Abdullahi Muktar, from Nigeria, said: “I have gained a lot from the International Foundation Year. My language skills have improved and I enjoy the way we have been taught.”

Abdulla Al-Marri, from Qatar, said: “I am enjoying the International Foundation Year course because I have found the staff to be really helpful and the students are very friendly. My English skills have improved and I have enjoyed working in a group.”
