Curriculum Development and Planning

Our aim is to develop a strong working partnership with academic colleagues, to enable students to access high-quality resources appropriate to their level of study.

We do this by attending planning meetings, supporting validations, assisting in resource visits, periodic reviews, and support for collaborate provision and can work flexibly with you to meet your curriculum planning needs.

New courses, validation and quality

The Library works closely with academic staff, primarily focusing on resources and opportunities for skills development within the curriculum. We welcome input at the earliest opportunity so that we can work with the development team leader and module leaders, from the initial planning stage through to the final stage of delivery.

Planning a new module or course

When you’re preparing a new module or course, it’s important to plan ahead. To ensure you have the correct resources in place,  contact your Liaison Librarian at the earliest opportunity. We can help you navigate a whole range of issues, such as sourcing new publications, accessibility and licensing requirements.

 Some things to consider:

  • What books, journals and databases will students need?
  • Are all my resources accessible to all students?
  • How much will these cost?
  • Will students require access to specific software?
  • Where will the module/course be taught?
  • How many students will be studying on the module?
  • Will it be offered to collaborate partners?
  • What licensing issues need considering with collaborate partners?
  • How will students develop their academic skills?

Leganto Reading Lists

Leganto is the University’s system for managing reading lists. It makes preparing and sharing course reading lists easy, and it makes the best use of our library resources.

Leganto will help you to produce reading lists that are relevant, interactive and accessible to students via Canvas.

Leganto allows you to add materials from practically any resource – print and e-books, online journals, websites and YouTube videos. You can collaborate directly with colleagues and with the library to make your lists comprehensive and up to date.

See our Reading List good practice guidelines and Reading List Policy.

Academic skills development

We can advise you on how to embed appropriate academic skills within your teaching.

For students, developing skills such as: finding information; report writing; critical thinking; literature reviews; reading and note-making; preparing for exams can make a real difference to their academic career.

We work closely with our Skills Development team and can advise on how to build these skills into your courses and modules to ensure that students are equipped to succeed throughout their degree and beyond.

The Skills for Learning Grid details the range of support materials available to embed into taught modules. For further information see the Skills for Learning page.

Subject advice

The Liaison Team work with academics to advise on the most appropriate print and online resources for their teaching.

The Library provides subject pages to help students to start research in their discipline.

For help on finding information, students and staff can speak to our staff at a library Helpdesk or chat online via ASSIST. The liaison librarians provide support for research and can be contacted at LISLiaison@wlv.ac.uk.
