Student Update: Support with your assessments and changes to requests for assignment extensions

Communication sent by email to all students on Thursday, 25 November 2021. Visit our Coronavirus web pages for further information and guidance.

Please be aware that this information was shared with students by email and correct at the time of sending. For the latest Covid-19 guidance, please visit our coronavirus webpages: www.wlv.ac.uk/coronavirus. If you are a student who has a query or needs support, please log a helpcall with ASK@WLV in e:Vision (www.wlv.ac.uk/evision).

I hope you are all well and enjoying your studies this term. As we approach the busy assessment period, I wanted to share a reminder with you about the support available from the University to help you achieve your best.

Please remember that you are not alone. There are teams of people at the University to support your journey through higher education, whether it's academic skills, an extension to assignment deadlines or your mental health and wellbeing. If in doubt, ask – no question is too small.

If you have any concerns or questions about teaching and learning activities on your course, I would encourage you to speak to your personal tutor or academic coach. You can find out who your personal tutor is in e:Vision (www.wlv.ac.uk/evision) by selecting the My Details tab and clicking the Personal Tutor button.

In response to the unprecedented circumstances of the pandemic, students were permitted to defer as many assessments as they wished without providing any evidence. As outlined below, we are now moving to a more limited self-certification system for up to seven days for a maximum of three assessments a year.

Preparing for your assessments

When you are getting ready to submit an assessment or preparing for an exam, you might find it helpful to access support from our Skills for Learning team based in the Library.

Our Skills for Learning team can help you to develop more effective approaches to your studies and assessments. You can access a range of online skills resources, academic skills workshops and book appointments for one-to-one support.

Upcoming sessions

  • Wednesday 1 December, 9:30 am - 11 am: Introduction to academic writing
  • Thursday 2 December, 2:30 pm – 4 pm: Finding academic information
  • Friday 3 December, 9:30 am – 11 am: Havard Referencing

If you'd like to speak to someone in person about your academic skills, you can also use the drop-in service held at all our libraries. There's no need to book – just come along at the following times:

  • Harrison Library at City Campus: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 11 am to 2 pm.
  • Walsall Library: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 11 am to 2 pm.
  • Hutchison Library at Telford Campus: Wednesday, 11 am to 2 pm.

Finding your assessments

The details of all your assessments are now available in your Canvas courses.

If your assessment is to be submitted online, for example, an essay or report, you must submit it to the Canvas portal with a gold star. Please ensure you have also read your responsibilities for submitting work in Canvas.

If it is an in-person or offline assessment, for example, a performance piece or exam, you will find details of the assessment in Canvas but no upload option.

Once available, you will also be able to see all your marks and feedback within Canvas.

Assessment support in exceptional circumstances

There are a number of University processes in place to help you if you find that illness or other personal circumstances are affecting your exams or other assessments. We understand that sometimes things do not go to plan, and if that is the case, be assured that we have support in place for students who find themselves in that situation.

Short term sickness absence

Students can self-certify their own sickness absence for up to seven days, a maximum of three assessments a year to cover any times when it might be difficult to obtain medical evidence of short term illness. Students will get an extension of up to seven days on that assessment without penalty through this self-certification process.

This can be completed in e:Vision, through the Assessment, Extenuating & Extensions section.

Please be aware that if you have already self-certified your own sickness absence for three assessments this year and require a further extension, you can still apply for an extension but you will need to provide evidence.

If you are on a course that is regulated by a professional or statutory body, self-certification may not be permitted. Please check with your course leader or personal tutor.

Long term absence, extenuating circumstances and fit to sit

The University's fit to sit and extenuating circumstances policy aims to ensure that students only submit assessments when they are fit to do so and that no student is disadvantaged by circumstances beyond their control.

When you submit an assignment or sit an examination, you declare that you are fit to do so. However, if you have an illness or personal difficulty that you think will affect your performance in one or more modules, or you cannot attend a formal examination, you should claim extenuating circumstances through e:Vision in the Assessment, Extenuating & Extensions section before or on the assessment date. Please note that evidence for your extenuating circumstance will be required and that where it relates to a positive Covid-19 test, this evidence will need to contain your name.

If your claim is accepted, you will generally be offered the opportunity to take the assessment, as if for the first time (with no grade penalty), within the current year. If you choose to submit your assignment to the original deadline, you can 'revoke' your claim via e:VIsion.

Please get in touch with your Faculty Student Services via the e:Vision helpdesk for more information.

Late submission of assessments

Please be aware that the penalties for submitting an assessment late are:
  • 10% reduction in mark for assessments submitted up to 48 hours after the deadline
  • 20% reduction for assessments submitted 3-7 days late.

However, no assessment will be reduced from a pass to fail through this process – all reductions will stop at the pass mark.

Wellbeing support

You may find that completing your assessments will challenge you in unexpected ways, especially if you're balancing your studies with work and home commitments. If you feel stressed or anxious, you can find support  at the University.

Your Faculty Student Services should be the first point of call to access help and advice, and the easiest way to contact them is by the e:Vision helpdesk.

All students can access online mental health and wellbeing support 24/7 through Togetherall – an online community monitored by trained professionals. If you need advice or extra help, please check our self-help resources webpage or complete the mental health and wellbeing support registration form.

Please remember that if you are struggling financially, hardship funding is available. Our Student Support and Wellbeing team host regular events, including weekly 'Let's talk about..' sessions and Wolves Wellbeing Day's. Find out more on their events webpage.
