Yam Cams: Photography in the Black Country

Yam Cams is a new photography project that aims to inspire people to photograph everyday life in the four Black Country boroughs: Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton.

Commissioned by Creative Black Country, Yams Cams will encourage people of the region to take a closer look at their local environment and view it with a fresh eye.

No prior photography experience is necessary.

Join the online Yam Cams event on Thursday, 8 April at 6 pm where you’ll be introduced to street photography by Tom Hicks, the artist behind Black Country Type; an ongoing photography project based in the Black Country.

He will explore street photography as an artistic practice and will introduce examples of internationally known photographers who have worked in the Black Country.

The session will also see the launch of the Yam Cams project.

Street photography has an accessible nature and you’ll be encouraged to experiment and try your own approaches.

Images submitted to Yam Cams will appear in an online Instagram gallery: @theyamcams.

A selection of these images will then be compiled in the form of a Photobook/Zine to document the project.

Anyone who has work selected to appear in the publication will receive a free copy.

Creatively, the only stipulation is that the photographs submitted to the project must be taken in their local area.

As the project will be digital in nature, there will be no restriction on the amount of participants and it will work as a creative activity under lockdown conditions.
