International Student Update: Enrolment and engaging with your studies

I hope you are settled into your studies and keeping safe in these first few weeks of the semester. We very much appreciate your patience and cooperation with the restrictions within which we are all working.

This update includes information for international students on:

  • Enrolling on your course
  • Monitoring attendance
  • Updating your contact details
  • Travelling to the UK
  • Support and hardship funding
  • Staying up to date with the latest information

Enrolling on your course – new and returning students

All students are required to enrol at the start of their course and the beginning of each academic year. This year you can do this online before arriving on campus.

Enrolment will allow you to:

  • Check and update your details (like your address, contact numbers and email address).
  • Access University services, support and Canvas.
  • Engage with your supervisors, academic and administrative staff.

Until you are enrolled, we cannot create your personal timetable, and you will not be able to access online study materials. Delaying your enrolment could also have an adverse effect on your sponsorship.

Enrolment instructions

Enrolment and module registration can be completed in e:Vision. Please visit the Introducing e:Vision webpage for information on how to access e:Vision if you are experiencing difficulties.

You will need to log in to your e:Vision and select the 'Enrolment' button on the home page. From here you'll be able to upload your ID photo, add your personal details and tell us how you're funding your studies.

Once you have completed the Personal Details, Education and Fees sections, you'll then be able to move on to Module Registration. You will need to upload your photo ID and complete the Confirmation task.

When you arrive in the UK and have completed your period of self isolation, you will need to upload a copy of your biometric residence permit (BRP) to fully complete your enrolment.

You can find further instructions, including a step-by-step video guide on how to enrol here: wlv.ac.uk/enrol-online

If you are experiencing any difficulties completing the enrolment process, you should contact your Faculty Student Services via the e:Vision Helpdesk.

Engaging with your studies and monitoring attendance

If you are studying on a tier 4 or student route visa, you are required, by the Home Office and the University, to attend all of your timetabled classes and to be fully engaged with your course. Poor attendance or failure to engage with your programme may impact your visa and your permission to remain in, or travel to, the UK. If you are withdrawn through this procedure, your visa will be cancelled and you will be required to leave the UK. Attendance at all timetabled events is monitored via an electronic register system compiled by your lecturers.

You must maintain regular attendance on your programme of study and fulfil the academic requirements of your programme.

If you have not yet entered the UK, you must engage with your course through Canvas. This will be monitored, and you will only be able to continue your course in person if you have fully engaged.

Students can access help, support and top tips for learning online in our guide to online learning during Covid-19.

Updating your contact details

To support the welfare of all our students, your contact details must always be kept up to date. Please ensure that where you live now (even if this is only temporarily) is recorded in your Term Time address (this may, or may not be, the same as your permanent home address).

To do this, please use the edit buttons found on the 'My Details' section on eVision.

Guidance for new students (and those who need a refresher)

Students can now watch a short video which includes useful links to where you can find facilities and support. This video DOES NOT replace your course inductions which can usually be found under the Conferences section of your course topic in Canvas.

The video includes links for:

  • Current students homepage
  • Accessing MyWLV App and your timetable, eVision etc
  • Canvas guidance - your teaching materials and sessions
  • IT Support - IT inductions, Canvas help and free Microsoft 365 and MS teams
  • Student Support - Faculty Student Services, Student Advisors and Academic Coaches
  • Where to find specific support
  • Library support
  • Financial guidance
  • Careers and the Workplace
  • Support for students with additional support needs/welfare needs
  • Mental health support
  • English language support

Travelling to the UK

In line with the current restrictions in place by the UK Government, there will be no on campus teaching (apart from practical sessions for critical worker courses) until 8 March at the earliest. Students are advised to check their timetable in MyWLV for the latest details.

Therefore, we are advising all our international students not to travel to the University and start their courses online. We will continue to send regular updates as we receive them to let you know when you can travel to the UK.

It is essential that students complete their enrolment as soon as possible (more information below) and that you have access to the appropriate IT equipment and Wi-Fi connection to engage with your studies effectively. Poor attendance or failure to engage with your programme may impact your visa and sponsorship.

It is essential that everyone continues to follow Government guidance and not travel to the University unless required or you need to for wellbeing reasons, or you do not have appropriate access to study space.

Support for students

Support is available for students who are isolating in University accommodation, including access to food and laundry services. Information about this is available on the University's self isolating support pages.

Students should be aware that travel advice may change while you are overseas, and are advised to regularly check all relevant gov.uk guidance pages for updates.

If you are looking for help and advice for anything related to your course (such as leave of absence, extenuating circumstances or assignment hand-in) you should contact your Faculty Student Services on the e:Vision Helpdesk.

To access support outside your course, please email internationalsupport@wlv.ac.uk, with your student number. Find out more about the student support services available to you here: www.wlv.ac.uk/support.

Hardship fund

In addition to the significant funding the University has put in place to support students experiencing financial hardship during the pandemic, some additional funding has now been made available from the Office of Students (OfS). Any students experiencing financial hardship, including international students, are invited to apply.

  • Log into e:Vison and go to your Student Home Page
  • Select My Finance and then Scholarships and Bursaries
  • Select Dennis Turner Hardship Fund

Applications should be submitted before Friday, 12 March.

Students can access more information on the Dennis Turner Hardship Fund here: www.wlv.ac.uk/fund.
